Did you know that your heart and your teeth are more connected than you might think? At Prestige Dental in Pasadena, our priority is not just your beautiful smile, but your overall systemic health. For patients with certain heart conditions, a routine dental cleaning or procedure requires extra precautions to ensure total safety.
In this guide, Dr. Vasag Bouzoghlanian explains why your medical history matters and how we coordinate with your cardiologist to provide the safest care possible.
Why Your Dentist Asks About Your Heart
During a dental procedure, especially those involving the gums (like a deep cleaning) or the roots of the teeth, bacteria from the mouth can sometimes enter the bloodstream. In most healthy individuals, the immune system handles this easily.
However, for patients with specific heart conditions, these bacteria can travel to the heart and attach to its lining or valves, potentially causing a serious infection known as Infective Endocarditis (IE).
Who Needs "Pre-Medication"?
To prevent infection, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend that certain high-risk patients take a dose of antibiotics—known as antibiotic prophylaxis—shortly before their dental appointment.
According to the latest guidelines, pre-medication is generally recommended for patients with:
- Artificial Heart Valves: Including mechanical or tissue valves.
- A History of Infective Endocarditis: If you’ve had this heart infection before.
- Certain Congenital Heart Defects: Specifically unrepaired cyanotic heart disease or defects repaired with prosthetic material (within the first six months).
- Heart Transplant Recipients: Specifically those who develop heart valve problems.
Note: As of the latest updates, most patients with heart stents, murmurs, or mitral valve prolapse no longer require pre-medication, but it is still vital to disclose these to our team.
Our Protocol for Your Safety
At Prestige Dental, we take a proactive, "safety-first" approach:
- Detailed Medical Review: We review your medical history at every visit. If you’ve had heart surgery or a new diagnosis since your last appointment, please let us know!
- Cardiologist Coordination: We often collaborate directly with your cardiologist to confirm if antibiotics are necessary for your specific case.
- Correct Antibiotic Choice: For patients with penicillin allergies, we follow the latest 2026 protocols—which have moved away from clindamycin in favor of safer, more effective alternatives like azithromycin or cephalexin.
- Emphasis on Prevention: The best way to prevent heart-related dental complications is to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Healthy gums are less likely to bleed and release bacteria into your system.
