Can I Have Dental Implants If I Smoke?

Can I Have Dental Implants If I Smoke?

When patients in the area of Pasadena, California are interested in replacing missing teeth, they are often introduced to the idea of considering dental implants. Dental implants are titanium posts that our dentist, Dr. Vasag Bouzoghlanian, can place and restore for patients ready for a permanent option. Dental implants are a wonderful option for many of our patients who want to avoid removable restorations such as dentures and partial dentures.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

It is extremely important that patients who are considering dental implants are appropriate candidates to ensure successful implantation. Dental implants require patients to have a healthy smile free from periodontal disease and active areas of decay. Systemic health problems such as diabetes must also be under control to allow for proper healing. Additionally, the bone of the jaw must be substantial enough to act as a proper foundation for the implant. While implants do stimulate the growth of bone around them, they still need sufficient bone to be in place to give them their initial grounding. Additionally, Dr. Vasag Bouzoghlanian and his team also encourage patients to avoid smoking.

Can smokers get dental implants?

Smoking is a habit that has been proven to be bad for not only a patient’s health but their overall body. So it comes as no surprise that it can affect one’s oral health and wellness, especially when it comes to dental restorations in the mouth. Smoking should be avoided, as many patients who are smokers will be at a much higher risk of experiencing an unsuccessful placement. Patients who are current smokers should attempt to stop prior to having their dental implants placed. At a minimum, smoking should stop after the implant surgery and during the initial healing phase to avoid complications. Stopping smoking will increase the chances of enjoying the implants for many, many years!
