Should I Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

Should I Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom tooth removal has become a common practice in dentistry nowadays. Many wisdom teeth are removed even before they erupt. Some patients that have had them removed have never even felt any pain from them. So why have them removed? This is a tricky question.

Most dentists will advise you to have you wisdom teeth removed as a preventive measure. If the wisdom teeth will create a reasonable risk for future pain or problems, most dentists will recommend removing them proactively. You may not be experiencing pain or problems currently. However, do you really want to wait and find out if you’ll be one of the lucky ones to experience wisdom tooth pain? Also, are you willing to risk losing years and years of orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth only to have them misalign again due to wisdom teeth eruption? It’s definitely worth it to give wisdom teeth removal heavy thought if removal has been recommended by your dentist.

Many patients who leave their wisdom teeth will often experience:

  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Jaw damage
  • Sinus issues
  • Swollen or inflamed gums around the wisdom teeth or adjacent teeth
  • Cavities on the wisdom teeth or adjacent teeth
  • Bothersome food collection and difficulty cleaning around the wisdom teeth
  • Cheek or tongue biting
  • Tooth misalignment
  • Cysts or other pathology developing around stuck wisdom teeth
  • Pain, swelling, pressure, or infection
  • And more!

We encourage you to visit our dentist at Prestige Dental in Pasadena to discuss whether or not to remove your wisdom teeth, as every patient is unique. In certain situations, properly erupted wisdom teeth may be beneficial and are treated like a regular set of teeth. Based on your dental history and jaw structure, our dentist will evaluate the risks, benefits, advantages, and disadvantages of removing your wisdom teeth, and will be able to give you a more educated answer. Contact us today at Prestige Dental in Pasadena for a consultation. We look forward to seeing you!
