TMJ Disorder

Relieve jaw joint pain and problems!

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper and lower jaw meets. The temporomandibular joint disorder occurs when the joint that attaches the upper jaw and lower jaw is not working properly, it’s sometimes referred to as myofascial pain dysfunction and Costen’s syndrome.

TMJ disorders are a group of complex problems with many possible causes

People with TMJ may have a clicking sound when opening or closing their mouth impeding the correct functionality. Other problems include pain when opening or closing, limited ability to open, or even locking of the jaw in an open position. This syndrome can cause headaches, ear pain or discomfort, dizziness, tooth sensitivity, neck, shoulder and jaw muscle pain, among others. Temporomandibular disorder affects the muscles that control chewing and the articulation of the jaw.

Treatment Options for TMJ disorders

Fortunately, there are many treatment options for TMJ disorders: occlusal and other therapies, medications, jaw rest, surgery (in severe cases) and much more. At Prestige Dental, we will evaluate the problem and may make an occlusal guard (sometimes called a nightguard) to protect the teeth, stabilize the jaw, and reduce your symptoms. Dr. Bouzoghlanian and staff may also prescribe medications and demonstrate relaxation techniques to increase the flexibility of your joints, and reduce clenching, grinding, and other harmful habits.
